It can be difficult to get guests to share their honest opinion about topics in a public forum like a podcast. Richard Hollis has more than enough years of credibility and experience behind him to engage in a blunt, authentic and eye-opening conversation on the threats we all face from web-based criminals and other bad actors in cyberspace. Richard is the CEO of Risk Crew, a London-based, cyber security risk management consulting firm. He has worked in the industry for over 30 years, developing his experience across the private sector, government and military roles.
Richard is a unique voice in the cyber defense industry, fully acknowledging that total cybersecurity is impossible. But rather than throwing up his hands in despair, Richard gives us hope that through a risk mitigation strategy, we can learn to live with certain threats as long as we are properly prepared. I found this realistic and pragmatic view to be both refreshing and action-oriented. We are not helpful in this cyber war for information and data, we can do our part to protect ourselves, our communities and our companies.
Over the course of the hour, we discussed the current cyber threat landscape facing individuals, governments and businesses as well as the misleading promises made by some in the cyber defense industry. We also talked about Richard’s career path and how a young man with a penchant for mischief turned into a company executive leading the international battle against cyber criminals in the 21st Century. It is an interesting story and one worth sharing with anyone you may know who occasionally drifts off the straight and narrow path. The skills one uses to cause trouble can just as easily be used to protect a nation.
