I had the privilege of interviewing Joshua Penner, CEO and Founder of AI start up Inquisio.AI, the mayor of Orting, Washington and the author of Strategy in 60 Minutes. Alongside his work as a small city Mayor, Josh’s goal with Inquisio.AI is to make government more effective and more accessible through its databases of policies and ordinances. As an veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp., he has a unique view on leadership and credibility, developing it, maintaining it, and making collaboration a part of it. His educational background includes Business Administration & Management with strategy, becoming a core part of his interest – the precursor to his book on strategy.
We discussed his overall aims for applying AI to local government issues, how to mitigate associated risks, what rules should govern the rollout of AI and we reflected on leadership in modern government and business.
Much of the real work of self governance in a democracy like the United States takes place at the local community level. Far from the fame of Washington, D.C. or the media spotlights in New York City or Los Angeles, cities, towns and villages elect boards, mayors and managers to keep the roads clear, crime in check and basic services running. It was a pleasure to interview one such mayor who doubles as an entrepreneur willing to place a bet on himself and his ideas for making local government work better using the latest technological innovations. Josh represents just one of many local elected and un-elected leaders who care more about providing essential services to their community than grabbing 30 second soundbites on cable news or talk radio. We could use more of them and perhaps this interview will inspire you to consider how you can be of service to your town or city.
I wish Joshua luck on his business venture and continued success to his hometown in the great American Northwest. Orting looks beautiful and I look forward to paying the town a visit some day soon.
