One of the reasons I love recording these podcast interviews is that it gives me a great reason to speak with inspirational people like Lucy Jung, the CEO of Charco Neurotech, a MedTech start-up that created a non-invasive device for managing the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Lucy was not a medical professional by trade when she began her company yet she knew her engineering design background could be applied to vexing issues in the health care genre. More than 10 million people across the world suffer from stiffness and slowness attributed to Parkinson’s. The CUE1 device developed by Charco has been successfully tested by patients who have claimed reduced symptoms and increased quality of life. By applying what Lucy knew about design engineering and listening to patient concerns, she is on her way to achieving a breakthrough health care treatment, what a remarkable story!
In this episode, we spoke about the early results of her company’s device, the theories behind why it may be an effective treatment, thoughts on medical innovation and how technology could be the innovator that medicine needs to get closer to treatment breakthroughs.
Throughout my career, I have talked with dozens of company leaders, founders, CEOs and board members. To be honest, many of those conversations are disappointing. I walk away feeling like I was misled, gamed or just talked past. So many company leaders are media trained to the point of inauthenticity. Lucy is a fine public speaker, and even if she has been media trained or taken coursework in public speaking, she is authentic, excited about her work, driven to help ordinary people with serious illnesses and humble enough to actively seek out skeptics so she can make her product the best it can be.
For those with family members or friends suffering with Parkinson’s Disease or other degenerative diseases of the brain, I hope this episode reminds you of how many researchers are out there actively racing to help your loved one. For those who listen to my shows to find tips on leadership and entrepreneurship, this should be at the top of your listening list and I encourage you to share with others. Lucy is exactly the kind of CEO we wish led all of our major companies, in and outside the health care industry. With a mission to help and a humble spirit, I certainly wish Lucy the very best of luck on her journey and that of her company.
