Modern medicine, based on scientific methods of research, testing and vetting have produced miraculous cures and extended life spans while increasing the quality of many of those lives along the way. However, evidence-based medicine has its limits and sometimes, the treatments are as harsh on our bodies as the diseases they are designed to treat. While common ailment treatments have always varied around the world, there seems to be a renewed interest in alterative treatments from “western” cultures. And with that interest have come practitioners and guides seeking to help, leading to a trend of more and more people hearing about these options and asking questions about their credibility and accessibility.
I had the chance to chat with Alison Crosthwait on this topic. She is a former, high ranking Wall Street professional who shares her journey from the depths of despair to helping others with traditional psychotherapy to alternative medicine. Our conversation explores the emerging topic of alternative health care options, especially related to mental health disorders. Alison talks about the importance of happiness and the challenges and obstacles people face in finding it. Traditional approaches to mental health care are discussed, along with the limitations and benefits of psychotherapy. Brian and Alison then explore the concept of alternative medicine, and various tools used in this field, such as breath work, physical movement, active imagination, hypnosis, affirmations, and psychedelics.
 Key topics discussed include:

  • The pursuit of happiness is an important but often overlooked goal.
  • Psychotherapy has its limitations and may not be suitable for all conditions.
  • Alternative medicine offers a range of additional but less understood or proven tools, including breath work, physical movement, active imagination, hypnosis, affirmations, and psychedelics.
  • Pharmaceutical companies play a significant role in shaping the treatment landscape.
  • Building resilience is crucial for navigating the challenges of life.
