It was a real treat to speak with Kerry-Ann Betton Stimpson, Chief Marketing Officer at the JMMB Group and producer and host of The Internal Marketing Podcast. She specifically focuses on empowering employees in the workplace, so that they become any brand or company’s best advocates. As a coveted speaker, she addresses companies across the world on how to cater to 21st century consumers. She examines the importance of word-of-mouth transactions in “dark social” forums and building strong brand identities through internal marketing.

We often overlook the obvious in business: people prefer to work with companies and individuals that they have heard something positive about from someone they trust. Word of mouth, whether in person or through modern digital channels, is a powerful yet hard to measure way to drive new customers. Anyone in the service business will tell you how critical positive word-of-mouth recommendations are to the success of a small business. Entire websites like Yelp and Trip Advisor were created out of the huge demand for people to read reviews about businesses before they interact with the business itself. This was simply the digital version of asking around your church group or parent’s association at school for a good local cleaner, lawyer, doctor, dentist, handyman or mechanic. Trust is built one customer at a time but that trust snowballs. Well, who better than the people who work for you to go home and tell their family, friends and neighbors about where they work? They are trusted and credible messengers for a company’s brand so Kerry-Ann believes that makes them the perfect ambassadors in the marketplace…perhaps even more valuable than a celebrity endorsement in an expensive mass media ad campaign.

Kerry-Ann has 20 years of experience in financial services marketing, making her one of our more seasoned business leader interviews so far. We spent a few minutes reflecting on her career and gaining sage advice on navigating a successful career over the course of multiple decades. I encourage you to listen and relisten to that segment of the show (~54 minute mark) as there were some real gems of truth and knowledge shared.

We explored a variety of topics related to modern marketing strategies, measuring return on advertising investment, building strong brand reputations and those lessons learned after decades in leadership positions. I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed creating it for you.
